"Going the Distance"Bruce Campbell, Colin O'Brady, Shannon Balcom, and Farnell Newton & The Othership Connection
This episode was originally taped at a live show on September 15, 2016 (Portland, OR)
Bruce Campbell reflects on his status as a cult film actor, Colin O’Brady explains how it feels breaking the world record for climbing the highest peaks on each of the seven continents, Shannon Balcom discusses her gardening-related Pinterest fail, and Farnell Newton & The Othership Connection brings all the funk we can handle.
If you’re like us, you were introduced to Bruce Campbell in his recurring role as Autolycus, King of Thieves, on the show Xena Warrior Princess. But let us catch you up on what else he’s done. Once sited as the “Laurence Olivier of bad movies,” Bruce is an actor, writer, director, producer and author known for portraying Ash in the Evil Dead film series and Sam Axe on the show Burn Notice. In 2002 he published his autobiography, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, a New York Times Bestseller. He is currently about to unveil the second season of his hit television series, Ash vs. Evil Dead, on Starz and is touring the country with his game show, Last Fan Standing. And did we mention he was on Xena? It bears repeating.
Colin O’Brady is an endurance athlete. Since suffering severe burns to 22 percent of his body in 2008, and told he’d never have full motion in his legs, he’s not only learned to walk again, he’s competed in more than 50 triathlons, including Ironman competitions. On May 27th 2016, Colin became the time record holder of the Explorers Grand Slam, an adventure challenge to climb the highest mountains on each of the Seven Continents and reach the North and South Poles. We thought about doing that once, but it seemed to require too much effort.
Shannon Balcom is a Portland native, and spends her days working in HR. By night, if she isn't too busy watching Netflix with her chihuahua Kenny Loggins, you can find her performing funny stuff around the city. She has won Back Fence PDX: Russian Roulette four times, and not just because she makes her parents come to every show and promise to vote for her. She likes calling what she does "storytelling" because it sounds more highbrow, but if you are laughing at it, you are free to think of it as stand-up comedy. She also is the funniest half of the hilarious new podcast about nothing, Are We Still Friends?.
Farnell Newton & The Othership Connection
Let’s slow things down and make them a little louder, little funkier, little more at home with a trumpet in hand. Farnell Newton & the Othership Connection are Portland’s premier place to find funk, soul, jazz, and anything else you can feel through the souls of your feet. Started by Trumpeter Farnell Newton (Jill Scott/Bootsy Collins/Jarrod Lawson) The Othership Connection consists of Newton (Trumpet), Tony Ozier (Keys/Vocals), Kyle Molitor (Trombone), Agyei Ptah-Hotep Marshall (Guitar), Marquay Seamster (Bass), and Tyrone Hendrix (Drums). They’re versatile, they sound sweet as syrup, and they’re as funky as it gets. We’ll meet you at the front by the amp, but give us space to dance.
